Theron "Terry" Smith Obituary

Theron "Terry" Smith, 62, of Eagle River, AK was killed Aug. 9, 2010 after the small plane he was piloting crashed in a remote area of southwest Alaska, near Dillingham.

Four passengers were killed, including former senator Ted Stevens. Four people with "varying degrees of injuries" survived, including former NASA chief Sean O'Keefe and his teenage son.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known, but weather may have been a contributing factor. At the time of the accident light rain, clouds and gusty winds were reported in the area. Even in good weather, flights through the mountains can be perilous.
