Former UFC heavyweight champion and two-time NCAA champion wrestler Kevin Randleman has died, according to multiple news sources. He was 44.

Randleman, a Las Vegas resident, died Thursday of heart failure after being admitted to a hospital in San Diego, California. He was being treated for pneumonia when the death occurred.

The former Ultimate Fighting Championship wrestler was a standout grappler at Ohio State University. He was a three-time All-American.

Randleman debuted in the UFC in 1999 and soon became the world heavyweight champion. In 2000, he successfully defended his title. He retired in 2011.

Friends of the fierce fighter and others in the MMA scene shared their condolences on social media platforms in reaction to Randleman’s death. Randleman was trending Friday on Facebook.

“I’m so sorry to hear about the passing of the legend Kevin Randleman,” wrote Dana White, UFC president, on Facebook. “I just got off the phone with Mark Coleman and we talked about some of our Kevin Randleman stories. RIP Kevin ‘The Monster’ Randleman.”

“Bas & I just heard from Kevin's wife,” wrote the fighter Mauro Ranallo in a Twitter post. “Taking the rest of the night off Twitter to mourn & celebrate the life of Kevin Randleman. #RIP”

Randleman is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and their three children.
