A Father’s Mission to Save Lives

by Legacy Staff

Tad Johnson honors the life and memory of his daughter Alexa by campaigning to save the lives of other young people.

On Feb. 10, 2013, Alexa Johnson, was driving to help a friend when her car rolled over. She was not wearing her seatbelt, and died instantly. Alexa was just 19.

Alexa’s father, Tad Johnson, soon turned his grief into a mission to save the lives of others. With encouragement and help from his wife Jona, Johnson created Alexa’s Hugs, a nonprofit that raises awareness among young people about the importance of wearing seatbelts. Alexa’s Hugs provides colorful, fashionable seatbelt wraps to help remind young drivers and their passengers to buckle up, each and every time.

Alexa’s friend Kaley Germer was inspired to start using her seatbelt after speaking with Johnson. In July 2013, five months after Alexa’s fatal accident, Germer survived a deadly car crash with only minor injuries, thanks to the message of Alexa’s Hugs.
