Aaron Thomas (1937–2024), all-time great NY Giants tight end

by Eric San Juan

Aaron Thomas was a tight end for the New York Giants and one of the team’s elite players in the 1960s, tied for sixth in all-time TD receptions for the team.

Aaron Thomas’ legacy

Aaron Thomas was a standout star at Oregon State, where he was scouted by the New York Giants’ head coach, Allie Sherman. Sherman insisted that one way or another, the Giants would acquire Thomas. He was instead drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 1961, but Sherman kept his word: He traded and got Thomas to his squad in 1962.

Thomas played 116 games with the Giants, pulling in 254 receptions (good for 17th all time) 4,253 yards (the 14th highest in franchise history), and 35 touchdown receptions, the sixth highest for the Giants. His best year was his 1967 Pro Bowl season, in which Thomas had 51 receptions for 877 yards and nine touchdowns.

After retiring in 1970, Thomas worked as a stockbroker, ran a restaurant with his father, and coached high school football.
