Adan Canto’s legacy
Born in Ciudad Acuña, Mexico, Canto attended Catholic school in Del Rio, Texas, then left home at 16 to pursue a career in music. He was working as a musician, singer, and songwriter in Mexico City when he landed a small part in a commercial. Other parts followed, and he soon transitioned to acting.
Canto debuted on American television in 2013 with a role in “The Following.” The next year, he had a small part as the mutant Sunspot in the film “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” One of his most notable roles came in 2016, when he was cast as Aaron Shore in the Kiefer Sutherland-led show “Designated Survivor,” playing a former White House chief-of-staff who became vice president. Canto also had a small part in “Narcos,” and reoccurring roles in “Blood & Oil” and “Second Chance.”
In 2022, Canto took on a leading role as Arman Morales in the thriller “The Cleaning Lady,” where for two seasons he starred opposite Élodie Yung. He was not set to appear in the third season due to his failing health. Canto had appendiceal cancer but kept his diagnosis private. He leaves behind his wife, artist Stephanie Ann Canto, and their two children, Roman Alder, 3, and Eve Josephine, 1.
