Alexander Gorshkov (1946–2022), first Olympic champion in ice dance

by Linnea Crowther

Alexander Gorshkov was a Russian figure skater who won gold the first time ice dance was an Olympic event, at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria.

Ice dance

Gorshkov and his partner, Lyudmila Pakhomova, were instrumental in lobbying for the roster of events at the Winter Olympics to include ice dance, which combines figure skating with elements of ballroom dancing. In 1968, they performed in the ice dance demonstration at the Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France, a key step along the way to adding it as an official Olympic sport. Gorshkov and Pakhomova went on to win five consecutive World Championships, from 1970 to 1974. After their first World win, the pair were married. They went on to win gold at the Olympics and then, just a month later, they took home a sixth World Championship win. Gorshkov and Pakhomova retired later in 1976. Since 2010, Gorshkov had served as president of the Figure Skating Federation of Russia.
