Acting career
Garfield frequently played villains, criminals, and corrupt businessmen, bringing a nervousness to his characters. His early films included “The Owl and the Pussycat” (1970), “Bananas” (1971), and “The Candidate” (1972). In 1974, he played notable supporting roles in “The Conversation” and “Nashville.” For a period in the 1980s, Garfield was credited under his birth name, Allen Goorwitz, in tribute to his father after his death. Some of the films in which he appeared as Goorwitz were “One from the Heart” (1981), “Continental Divide” (1981), and “The Black Stallion Returns” (1983). Garfield also appeared in “The Cotton Club” (1984), “Beverly Hills Cop II” (1987), “Dick Tracy” (1990), “The Ninth Gate” (1999), and dozens more films.
