Born in Austria to a family of onion farmers, Knavs grew up there and in Slovenia. While raising her two daughters, Ines and Melania, she worked at a children’s clothing factory, creating textile patterns. Knavs and her husband, Viktor, lived in the U.S. for several years as green card holders before becoming U.S. citizens in 2018.
Tributes to Amalija Knavs
It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved mother, Amalija.
Amalija Knavs was a strong woman who always carried herself with grace, warmth, and dignity. She was entirely devoted to her husband, daughters, grandson, and son-in-law. We will miss her beyond…
It is a very sad day. Our beautiful and brilliant First Lady Mrs. Trump has lost her mom. Mrs. Amalija Knavs, a wonderful mom and wife passed yesterday. She and Mr. Knavs are both naturalized U.S. citizens and like our First Lady love and loved our country. Rest in Peace. 🙏💔 pic.twitter.com/7B5Rlcloie

I always appreciated that Amalija put her family first. My condolences go out to Victor, Melania, Barron, and the entire Knavs and Trump families. God Rest Amalija’s soul. pic.twitter.com/Kr8h9dLRer
My deepest condolences to Melania and Barron Trump on the death of their beloved mother and grandmother, Amalija Knavs, aged "only" 78. The former First Lady had kept vigil during the holidays at her mother's bedside. I can't imagine her pain right now. RIP. pic.twitter.com/YLSqy5uX0u
