by Eric San Juan

Andrés García was a Mexican actor who became a Latin American icon in the 1960s and ‘70s, with roles in over 50 films and many popular telenovelas.

Andrés García’s legacy

Andrés García was born in the Dominican Republic, but emigrated to Mexico at a young age and became a citizen. His good looks and gallant persona drew him attention, leading him to be cast in the film “Chanoc” at 25. By the late 1960s he had a successful career in entertainment. García enjoyed roles in films aimed at Latin American audiences, including “Pedro Navaja,” “La última noche,” “Toña machetes,” “El día de los asesinos,” and “Nora la rebelde,” with over 50 roles in all.

He was also featured in an array of the photo romance novels popular in the region during the 1970s. This helped him land roles in telenovelas, a style of soap opera television series popular with Latin American audiences. He starred in shows such as “El Privilegio de Amar,” “Mujeres engañadas,” and “Con Toda el Alma.” In 1985, he starred in “Tú o nadie,” which became one of the most successful telenovelas of the decade.

In his later years, García moved to reality television, but in 2006 he returned to telenovelas with “El cuerpo del deseo,” which found international success and was translated into Hindi, Urdu, and Filipino.
