Anne Whitfield’s legacy
Whitfield entered the acting world at a young age, first appearing in radio commercials when she was seven years old. She was a regular on such radio dramas as “Our Miss Brooks,” “One Man’s Family,” and “The Baby Snooks Show.” Whitfield added stage work on her resume within a few years of her radio debut, and when she was 15, she was cast in “White Christmas.” She played Susan Waverly, granddaughter of Major General Tom Waverly.
Whitfield was a busy actress in the 1950s and ‘60s, appearing in such movies as “Juvenile Jungle,” “Tick, Tick, Tick,” and “Senior Prom.” She was more frequently seen on TV, making appearances in shows like “Father Knows Best,” “The Donna Reed Show,” “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis,” “Rawhide,” “Hawaiian Eye,” “That Girl,” “Perry Mason,” “Adam 12,” and “Emergency!” She had a multi-episode arc on “Days of Our Lives” in the mid-‘60s, playing Barbara Harris.
Whitfield largely left acting in the 1970s, only taking occasional roles from then on. In later years, her work included running a bed and breakfast and working in the Washington State Department of Ecology. She was an activist for such causes as voter registration, environmental responsibility, and women’s rights.
