Anthony Hickox’s legacy
In some ways, Hickox was born to make movies. His mother was Anne V. Coates, the Academy Award-winning editor of “Lawrence of Arabia,” and his father was the English film director Douglas Hickox. He briefly worked as a club promoter but moved to Los Angeles in the 1980s to work as a writer. His directing debut came in 1988 with “Waxwork,” a comedy horror film he both wrote and directed. It proved successful enough to earn a sequel, “Waxwork II: Lost in Time.”
Hickox’s best-known work might be his 1992 supernatural horror film “Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth,” based on the acclaimed series by Clive Barker. It was the second highest grossing film of the “Hellraiser” series. His work was not limited to horror, however. Movies like 1997’s adaptation of the sword and sorcery comic “Prince Valiant” and 1999’s Dolph Lundgren-led action movie “Storm Catcher” proved he could work in a wide array of genres. Later in his career, he did direct-to-video and direct-to-streaming movies, including “Submerged,” starring Steven Seagal, before settling down in Romania with his family.
