Ashton Carter (1954–2022), former Defense Secretary under President Obama

Ashton Carter was the Defense Secretary under President Obama from 2015 until 2017.  

Obama Defense Secretary 

Ashton Carter worked for many Presidential administrations starting as assistant secretary of defense for international security policy under President Bill Clinton. He served in many other positions in the Department of Defense. Carter was the Defense Secretary under President Barak Obama from 2015 until 2017. As Defense Secretary, he directed that all combat positions be open to women and created a policy that allowed transgender people to openly serve in the military. He was known for frequent visits to troops overseas. At the time of his passing, he was the director of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard.
