Barry Goldberg (1942–2025), blues keyboardist

by Eric San Juan

Barry Goldberg was a blues and rock keyboardist and producer who played with a long list of music icons, including Bob Dylan, Stephen Stills, Steve Miller, and many others.

Barry Goldberg’s legacy

Goldberg often played with the best in the business. The blues and rock keyboardist’s decades-long career included work with some of the biggest names in rock history, including Bob Dylan, Stephen Stills, Steve Miller, and many others, both as a musician and as a producer.

In his teen years, Goldberg was already playing with legends, sitting behind the keyboards for artists like Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. In 1965, he played with Dylan in his controversial Newport Folk Festival performance, where the once acoustic-focused Dylan played an electric guitar. That same year, Goldberg and Miller formed the Goldberg-Miller Blues Band. Around this time, he also had another band, The Electric Flag, with Mike Bloomfield, Buddy Miles and Harvey Brooks. In 1974, he launched a solo career with the release of his self-titled debut album, co-produced by Dylan. He returned the favor by later producing Dylan’s cover of the Curtis Mayfield classic, “People Get Ready.”

Goldberg continued to work with high-profile artists in the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. Records he produced or songs he wrote appeared on albums by Percy Sledge, The Ramones, Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker, Gladys Knight and countless other artists. He toured with the Chicago Blues Reunion, played with Neil Young, and made many other contributions to the last six decades of music. Goldberg’s work was highlighted in “Born in Chicago,” the 2020 documentary he co-produced.

As a composer, Goldberg’s work was featured in an array of films and TV shows, including “Captain America,” “Return of the Living Dead III,” “Street Time,” and “Buck James.”

RIP Barry Goldberg. Not only did he play in the band at Newport '65, but I'm pretty sure he's the only person to both produce Bob Dylan & be produced BY Bob Dylan. Definitely the only one to also babysit his kids.
