Bob Bryar (1979–2024), former My Chemical Romance drummer

by Linnea Crowther

Bob Bryar was the former drummer for My Chemical Romance, including on their hit 2006 album “The Black Parade.”

Bob Bryar’s legacy

Bryar joined My Chemical Romance in 2004, just after the release of their breakthrough sophomore album, “Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge.” He had become acquainted with the band while working as a sound engineer for The Used while they toured with My Chemical Romance. As My Chemical Romance was in need of a new drummer, he left the touring world and brushed up on his drumming skills to join the band.

Though Bryar was My Chemical Romance’s longest tenured drummer, remaining with them through 2010, he only played on one of their studio albums. “The Black Parade” was a classic, though, yielding four hit singles, including “Welcome to the Black Parade” and “Teenagers.” The LP was their biggest chart success, reaching No. 2 in the U.S., and it was included in notable lists of the year’s best albums. Bryar continued to tour with My Chemical Romance in the wake of their biggest success, and he played on a number of non-studio releases, such as the live album “The Black Parade Is Dead!” and video LP “¡Venganza!”

When Bryar suddenly left My Chemical Romance in 2010, the band’s statement was brief and non-specific, calling it a “painful decision.” Bryar later spoke of having been “kicked out” of My Chemical Romance. In later years, many of the band’s fans were shocked and angered by his social media posts, which allegedly contained racist and homophobic material that has since been removed. Bryar also posted candidly about his struggles with mental health.
