Bob “Bushwhacker Butch” Miller’s legacy
Hailing from New Zealand, Miller began wrestling in his home country in the 1960s in local promotions. He teamed up with Brian “Bushwhacker Luke” Wickens, originally in a tag team called the Kiwis. In the early 1980s, they changed their name to the Sheepherders and wrestled internationally, including in the U.S. After a hiatus where Miller preferred to stay near home in Australia and Wickens remained in the U.S., they reunited and joined the WWE in 1988 under a new name, the Bushwhackers. They transformed from villainous “heels” to heroic “babyfaces” and found fame as the WWE was expanding and attracting new fans. Miller and Wickens brought comedy to the program with their over-the-top antics, which included licking people. The two appeared in a 1994 episode of “Family Matters” as the Psycho Twins tag team. In 2015, the duo was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.
Notable quote
“[W]e had a fantastic relationship with Vince [McMahon]. When we went up there and he said, ‘Guys, I would like to maybe turn you good guys,’ and blah, blah, blah and I got up on his table, right in front of him, I’d never met him before, my face was about two inches from his face. I was on his desk, on my hands and knees. And I said, ‘Vince, if you want us babyfaces with faces like this, you go right ahead!’” —from a 2023 interview for Inside the Ropes
