Brian “Brizz” Gillis’ legacy
Gillis was one of three founding members of LFO (an acronym for Lyte Funkie Ones), a boy band originating from New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1995. LFO had early moderate success, including a cover of New Kids on the Block’s “Step By Step” and “Can’t Have You,” a remix of Yvonne Elliman’s disco hit “If I Can’t Have You.” Though the latter cracked the Billboard Hot 100, Gillis had grown restless with the band’s failure to make it big. While LFO’s original song “Summer Girls” eventually became a big hit in the summer of 1999, Gillis had already left the band earlier that year. Gillis is the third member of LFO to have died; he was preceded in death by founding member Rich Cronin (1974–2010) and Devin Lima (1977–2018), Gillis’ replacement after he left the band.
