Cat Glover (2024), Sign o’ the Times dancer

by Eric San Juan

Cat Glover was a singer, dancer and choreographer best known for her work with Prince (1958–2016) in the 1980s, most notably the “Sign o’ the Times” concert film.

Cat Glover’s legacy

Before there was “America’s Got Talent,” there was “Star Search,” a popular televised talent competition launched in the 1980s. Chicago-born Glover had been dancing since she was five years old, and she saw the show as a possible ticket to stardom. As part of the duo Pat and Cat with fellow dancer Patrick Allen, she earned big audience acclaim as they earned two perfect scores and won in seven out of eight appearances.

Glover and her partner did not win the “Star Search” finals, but she did win the attention of Prince, who by this time was already one of the biggest entertainers in the world. Glover idolized him and accepted his offer to collaborate. Over the next several years, she was choreographer for his video for “U Got the Look” with Sheena Easton in 1987, plus toured with him as a dancer on the “Sign o’ the Times” and “Lovesexy” tours. She was also featured throughout the “Sign o’ the Times” concert film, and she performed the signature rap on “Alphabet St.,” a hit from “Lovesexy.”

Glover forged out on her own in 1989 with the release of her first recording, the “Catwoman” EP. She later continued to dance, choreograph, and record.
