His son, Ty Gibbs is also a NASCAR driver, as was his brother, J.D. Gibbs (1969–2019). Gibbs played college football at Stanford University before making his NASCAR debut in 2000. He raced in the Craftsman Truck Series and Busch series before retiring from driving in 2003. Gibbs joined his father at Joe Gibbs Racing as well as working with him as an assistant coach for Washington for several years. Beginning in 2007, he managed the team’s offshoot, Joe Gibbs Racing Motocross.
Gibbs on motocross
“I love this sport, plain and simple. Supercross and the outdoors are so much fun for me, especially in the job I’m at now. This side of racing gives me a break from my day-to-day work. It allows me to go do something that I really like.” —from a 2018 interview for JE Pistons
