Dahrran Diedrick (1979–2023), Big 12-leading Cornhuskers rusher

by Eric San Juan

Dahrran Diedrick, a Big 12-leading rusher for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, enjoyed a 10-year career in both the NFL and the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Dahrran Diedrick’s legacy

Born in Jamaica and raised in Toronto, Canada, Diedrick became the first Canadian recruit to ever receive a scholarship to play at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 1998. He was a leader on the field for the Cornhuskers, leading the Big 12 Conference his junior year with 1,299 rushing yards and also scoring 15 touchdowns. The team also went to the 2002 Rose Bowl during his time on the squad. Off the field, Diedrick earned his undergraduate degree in criminal justice.

After graduation, he was drafted by the San Diego Chargers before moving around the NFL without receiving much play time. He eventually signed with the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos in 2005. He’d also go on to play with the Montreal Alouettes and Hamilton Tiger-Cats. His career ended when he was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma in 2014. It is a generally incurable diagnosis.

All told, Diedrick played in 130 professional games, rushing for 872 yards on 179 carries, including six touchdowns. He also spent 2017 as a coach for the Toronto Argonauts, where he was part of his fourth Grey Cup team.
