Dale Wilson’s legacy
Anime fans who followed the Ocean dubs of popular series like “Dragon Ball Z” knew the voice of Wilson well. As the portrayer of the fan-favorite villain Cell, as well as a host of other characters, including Kami, King Yemma, Android 8, and Goz, he helped provide English audiences with a gateway into Japan’s global smash hit series.
The Canadian voice actor’s resume spanned far beyond just “Dragon Ball Z,” however. Wilson’s roster of dubbing work includes “X-Men: Evolution” (as Robert Kelly), “Transformers: Armada” and “Transformers: Cybertron” (as Smokescreen and Mudflap, respectively), “Mobile Suit Gundam 00” (as Pang Hercury), and dozens of projects.
Wilson also did extensive voice work for North American series, including the nostalgic late-1980s’ favorite, “G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero,” on which he was Capt. Grid-Iron, Mutt, and other characters; the 1990s’ “Street Fighter,” “Iron Man: Armored Adventures” in 2012, plus many more over three decades. He also provided voices in films, including “Bionicle: Mask of Light,” “Sabrina: Friends Forever,” and a 2003 Canadian animated adaptation of “Ben Hur.”
In his later years, Wilson struggled with illness. His most recent work, voicing two characters, was for the five-year series “Superbook,” which ended in 2018.
