Dave Frost (1952–2023), California Angels pitcher

by Linnea Crowther

Dave Frost was a pitcher in the 1970s and ‘80s with Major League Baseball (MLB) teams including the California Angels.

Dave Frost’s legacy

Frost was a multisport athlete at Stanford University, concentrating on basketball but also excelling on the baseball team. But when back and ankle injuries kept him off the basketball team, he continued with baseball despite a shoulder injury that sometimes hindered his pitching, and he made his way to the 1974 MLB Draft. The Chicago White Sox chose him, and he spent several years on their minor league teams before making his MLB debut in 1977. Frost was traded to the Angels later that year, shuttling between their minor league teams and the majors before gaining a starting spot on their roster in 1979. That year, he helped lead the Angels to the postseason; they won the American League West Division.

Frost remained with the Angels through 1981 before being traded to the Kansas City Royals for a final season. Ultimately, his shoulder problems cut his career short. He was released by the Royals in 1982, and he played briefly in the minor leagues before retiring from baseball in 1984. In his career, Frost had a 33-37 win-loss record, a 4.10 ERA, and 222 strikeouts.
