Dave McCarty (1969–2024), won 2004 World Series with the Red Sox

by Eric San Juan

Dave McCarty was an 11-season Major League Baseball veteran who won a World Series with the 2004 Red Sox, helping the team break its 86-year World Series drought.

Dave McCarty’s legacy

Born in Houston, Dave McCarty was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1991 and made his major league debut two years later. He was a journeyman player who spent time with seven different teams over the course of his 11-season career. He notched 36 career home runs and 362 hits in 1,493 career at-bats.

McCarty’s longest stint was also his most notable: He played three seasons with the Boston Red Sox, including the team’s 2004, curse-breaking World Series win. McCarty played first base and outfield, plus was part of the squad that broke the team’s 86-year championship drought. He retired after the 2005 season.

After retirement, McCarty spent several years as an analyst with NESN.
