Dave Wilcox (1942–2023), Hall of Fame 49ers linebacker

by Eric San Juan

Dave Wilcox was a Hall of Fame linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers who was known as “The Intimidator” for his aggressive style of play.

Dave Wilcox’s legacy

Dave Wilcox was a notable name in Oregon sports even before he joined the San Francisco 49ers. Born in Ontario, Oregon, he was a star athlete at Vale High School, and he earned wider recognition during his time at Boise Junior College, now known as Boise State University. There, he earned junior college All-America honors, played in the Coaches’ All-America Bowl and the College All-Star Game, and won outstanding lineman honors for his play in the Hula Bowl.

After being drafted into the NFL by the San Francisco 49ers, Wilcox earned a reputation as a fierce competitor and was nicknamed “The Intimidator.” He played in San Francisco for 11 seasons, shutting down opposing offenses and earning himself time in seven Pro Bowls. Wilcox was also known for his physical toughness, missing only one game during his career.

Wilcox helped the 49ers end a 13-year run without any post-season appearances, forcing opposing teams to rearrange their offense around him.  His fearsome play earned him All-NFL honors in 1967 and every year from 1970 to 1973, and All-NFC honors three straight years, 1971 to 1973. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000.

Notable quote

“Nobody was going to run in my area; nobody was going to pass in my area. This was my spot, and nobody was welcome there – except me.”—from NFL Films footage
