Diane Noomin (1947–2022), pioneering underground comics artist

by Linnea Crowther

Diane Noomin was one of the first women working in underground comics, writing and drawing characters including DiDi Glitz.

Wimmen’s Comix

Noomin began writing and drawing comics after being inspired by the creators of Wimmen’s Comix, an influential underground comics anthology focusing on women’s art and writing. She spoke to the anthology’s founders as they were preparing the first issue, and by the second issue, Noomin had created her own comics, which debuted in the second issue. She became best known for DiDi Glitz, through whom Noomin told stories of feminism, reproductive choice, body image, and more. Noomin and Aline Kominsky founded the anthology Twisted Sisters in 1975, also publishing the work of women artists and writers. She won a prestigious Eisner Award for her 2019 anthology “Drawing Power: Women’s Stories of Sexual Violence, Harassment, and Survival.”

Noomin on the genesis of DiDi Glitz

“She started as a costume for a Halloween party at Gilbert Shelton and Lora Fountain’s house and quickly took over. …In 1974, I did a full-fledged DiDi story for Wimmen’s Comix. It was four pages and was called ‘She Chose Crime,’ and when I was putting this book together I realized that DiDi came out almost fully developed. She hasn’t changed, she hasn’t grown or anything like that. If I look at that first story, the drawing has changed and I’d like to think that certain things have gotten better, but in that story, DiDi’s persona is it.” —from a 2012 interview for the Comics Journal
