Acting career
Silla, who was 3 feet 11 inches tall, began his career as a circus performer in his native country of Italy. He began doing stunt work, coming to Hollywood and sometimes standing in for children in films including “The Towering Inferno” and “Battlestar Galactica.” When Silla began acting, audiences couldn’t always recognize him. He often wore costumes that covered his face, as when he played Cousin Itt, or a hang-gliding Ewok in “Return of the Jedi,” or the robot Twiki, voiced by Mel Blanc, on TV’s “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.” His other movies included “The Black Bird,” “Spaceballs,” “The Golden Child,” and “Poltergeist.”
Notable quote
“I did work on some great shows, but my favorite was playing Cousin Itt in the original Addams Family in the 1960s.” —from a 2010 interview for the Star Wars Interviews blog
