by Kirk Fox

Garry Roberts was a founding member and the lead guitarist for the Irish rock band the Boomtown Rats.

The Boomtown Rats

Garry Roberts was a founding member and lead guitarist of the Irish rock band the Boomtown Rats. The band was formed in Dublin, Ireland in 1975 by Roberts, lead singer Bob Geldof, keyboardist Johnnie Fingers, drummer Simon Crowe, guitarist Gerry Cott and bassist Pete Briquette. The band featured elements of pub rock, new wave, and power pop among other genres and found success in the UK in 1977 with their first single “Lookin’ After No.1,” which made the top 40. A string of UK hits followed including “Rat Trap” and “She’s So Modern.” Their biggest song was 1979’s “I Don’t Like Mondays,” which was an international hit and their only single to reach the Billboard Hot 100. The song was written in response to a school playground shooting in California. The band broke up in 1986 and reformed in 2013 with the original members minus Johnnie Fingers and Gerry Cott. They released an album in 2020 and continue to tour as a live act.
