Gary Graham (1950–2024), star of Alien Nation, Star Trek: Enterprise

by Eric San Juan

Gary Graham was an actor best known for co-starring on the television series “Alien Nation,” along with a half-dozen “Alien Nation” TV movies, as well as for his appearances on “Star Trek: Enterprise” as Soval, the Vulcan ambassador to Earth.

Gary Graham’s legacy

Born in Long Beach, California, Graham made his screen debut in 1975 in a small movie, “Lost on Paradise Island.” A series of television roles followed, including appearances on “Eight Is Enough,” “Knots Landing,” “The Dukes of Hazzard,” and “Moonlighting.” His big break came in 1989 when he was cast as Detective Matthew Sikes in the TV movie “Alien Nation,” which was quickly followed by a 22-episode television series and five additional made-for-TV movies.

Science fiction would prove to be Graham’s bread and butter, first with a recurring role on the TV show “M.A.N.T.I.S.,” then again when he played Soval, the Vulcan ambassador to Earth on “Star Trek: Enterprise.” Though Soval was his best-known Trek character, Graham played others, including appearing in an episode of “Star Trek: Voyager,” and playing the character Ragnar in several “Star Trek” fan films.

When not acting, Graham was a musician. He fronted several bands, including the Gary Graham Garage Band, the Gary Graham Band, and the Sons of Kirk.
