Gary Mage (1946–2025), Hall of Fame bowler

by Eric San Juan

Gary Mage was a Hall of Fame bowler who excelled in the 1960s and ‘70s, then went on to form the PBA Northwest Region, which he oversaw until 2020.

Gary Mage’s legacy

For decades, Mage was a mainstay in the world of bowling, first on the lanes, and later as an ambassador of the sport.

He joined the Professional Bowlers Association in 1965 and quickly made a name for himself, touring full time and taking home the PBA Tour national title at the Seattle Open in 1972.

Later that decade, Mage helped the sport grow when he founded the PBA Northwest Region, but he did far more than just create the organization: He served as regional director from its founding in 1979 until retiring in 2020. In 2004, he also took up the mantle for the PBA West Region, a role he also held until 2020.

In recognition of his contributions to professional bowling, Mage was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame in 2022, a year after being elected for the honor. During his time in the sport, he hosted more tournaments than any other regional director in the history of the PBA.

Notable quote

“To have my name with the greats both bowling and promoting the sport is an honor beyond my wildest dreams.” — PBA Hall of Fame induction ceremony, 2022
