Gavin Creel’s legacy
Gavin Creel began his journey to Broadway stardom doing local theater. After getting a degree in musical theatre from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, he performed in regional theaters in Ohio, New York, Massachusetts and elsewhere before landing the part of Nick Piazza in the 1998 national tour of “Fame.”
His Broadway debut came in 2002 with “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” He became an instant sensation, earning the first of two Tony Award nominations. The second came in 2009 for “Hair,” but it was 2017 when Creel took home the Tony, this time for his featured work in the revival of “Hello Dolly!” Creel also garnered awards and praise for his performances in “The Book of Mormon,” which earned him a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical, and “Into the Woods,” which earned Creel a Grammy Award alongside his castmates for Best Musical Theater Album.
Other notable stage roles for him arrived in “La Cage aux Folles,” “Flashdance,” “She Loves Me,” and “Waitress.” Creel can be heard on a wide array of cast recordings, and as a solo artist, he released two albums and an EP: “Goodtimenation,” “Get Out,” and “Quiet.” He also wrote and performed the Metropolitan Museum of Art-commissioned “Walk on Through: Confessions of a Museum Novice.”
