Gene Clines was an outfielder who was part of Major League Baseball’s first all-minority lineup and who won the 1971 World Series with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Gene Clines was a speedy line-drive hitting outfielder who helped the Pittsburgh Pirates win the 1971 World Series championship. He played center field for the Pirates on September 1, 1971, when they fielded the first all-minority lineup in Major League Baseball history featuring players of Black and Latino descent. He hit over .300 for the Pirates in 1971 and 1972. After five years in Pittsburgh, he finished his career playing for the Mets, Rangers, and Cubs. Afterwards, he coached in the Majors for various teams including the Cubs and the Giants.

The #SFGiants are saddened to learn of the passing of former coach Gene Clines. Clines spent over a decade in the Giants organization as a hitting and outfield coach on the Major League staff and in the player development department.
We mourn the loss of Gene Clines, who spent parts of three decades in the Cubs organization as a player, first base coach and hitting coach. He was a World Series champion with the Pirates in 1971.
