Golden Richards’ legacy
The Utah-born Richards was a three-sport star athlete at Granite High School and continued that success at Brigham Young University (BYU). He routinely led the BYU Cougars in receiving, set multiple records, and one year led the country in punt returns. He finished his college career at the University of Hawai’i.
Richards was a second-round draft pick for the Dallas Cowboys in 1973. His speed earned him a starting slot in 1974, and he remained a consistent threat in the field throughout his five years in Dallas. In the 1978 Super Bowl, he pulled down a 29-yard pass from fullback Robert Newhouse for a touchdown.
Richards went to the Chicago Bears for the 1978-79 season, nabbing a career high 27 receptions. However, years of sports injuries had finally taken their toll. He finished his career with the Denver Broncos in 1980. All told, he made 122 receptions for 2,136 yards and 17 touchdowns in 86 games.
After his retirement, Richards produced and hosted “ESPN Outdoors.” He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2011 and struggled with his health for his remaining years.
