Grand Daddy I.U. (1968–2022), 1990s rapper and producer

Grand Daddy I.U. was a rapper and producer known for singles including “Something New” and “Sugar Free.”

Musical career

Born Ayub Bey, Grand Daddy I.U. was discovered by Bix Markie (1964–2021) in the late 1980s. On the strength of his demo, Markie brought him to the Juice Crew hip-hop collective and got him signed to Cold Chillin’ Records. Grand Daddy I.U. released his debut album in 1990, Smooth Assassin, produced by Markie. It included the singles “Something New” and “Sugar Free.” He followed it with 1994’s “Lead Pipe” and the single “Represent.” Grand Daddy I.U. became more involved with the production side of the music business after the mid-1990s, working with artists including KRS-One and Ice-T. He released new albums in 2007 and 2015, most recently releasing the single “Stay Fly” in 2021.
