Sports Illustrated and later work
Wahl joined Sports Illustrated early in his career, in 1997. There, he became known for covering NCAA basketball tournaments and the World Cup. His soccer coverage for Sports Illustrated began when the sport was not yet widely reported on in the U.S., and he grew to become a soccer expert and one of the world’s most influential journalists covering the sport. In addition to his Sports Illustrated reporting, Wahl wrote books on soccer including “The Beckham Experiment” and “Masters of Modern Soccer.” After leaving Sports Illustrated in 2020, he worked as an analyst for CBS Sports. Wahl also produced the podcast “Fútbol with Grant Wahl.”
Notable quote
“I love being a soccer journalist in America. You’re starting out, it’s a pretty blank canvas in terms of how you can approach things. All I try to do is cover it with curiosity and passion. There still aren’t that many soccer journalists in America, so you feel like you’re blazing a trail with the stuff you do. It’s good fun.” —from an interview for the Set Pieces
