Helena Rojo’s legacy
Rojo’s early career focused on stage work, as well as modeling. By the early 1970s, she had begun to appear in such movies as “El club de los suicidas” and “Fin de fiesta.” “Aguirre, the Wrath of God” was one of her higher-profile movies; she had a leading role as the mistress of a Spanish conquistador, speaking out against a mutiny. Her other movies included “La casa del Sur,” “Más negro que la noche,” “La gran aventura del Zorro,” “Foxtrot,” and “Misterio.”
Rojo was also well known among Spanish-speaking audiences as a star of telenovelas. She appeared in dozens of popular dramas, often in leading roles. An early example was 1972’s “Extraño en su pueblo,” in which she played Isaura. She went on to star in such telenovelas as “Extraños caminos del amor,” “La traición,” “El privilegio del amar,” “Amor real,” and “El color de la pasión.” Over a decades-long career in telenovelas, Rojo played both sympathetic and villainous characters. Though much of her career was on Mexican television, she made an appearance on U.S. TV in 2006 on “Ugly Betty.”
