Ian Bairnson’s legacy
Bairnson’s first fame was with Pilot, the Scottish band formed by two former members of the Bay City Rollers. He played as a session musician on Pilot’s first album, including on their hit single, “Magic.” Subsequently, Bairnson joined the band as a regular member, remaining for several years and later rejoining for reunions. With Pilot, Bairnson met Alan Parsons, who produced their debut album. Parsons was forming his own band, the Alan Parsons Project, which Bairnson joined as a core member. His guitar work can be heard prominently in their music, including the solos in “Eye in the Sky” and “Games People Play.”
In 1978, Bairnson played guitar on the first of four Kate Bush albums he would contribute to. On her 1978 debut, “The Kick Inside,” Bairnson played the guitar solo on the single “Wuthering Heights.” Later, Bairnson played with Bucks Fizz, co-writing their hits “Can’t Stand the Heat” and “Run for Your Life.” He became a busy session musician, working with artists including Kenny Rogers (1938–2020), Neil Diamond, Joe Cocker (1944–2014), Sting, and Eric Clapton.
Bairnson’s advice for young guitarists
“I think you should first concentrate on the more technical approach, but never forgetting to put your emotions while you are playing. The music industry has changed a lot so it is difficult for me to suggest which way to go, but pursuing your dreams is the beginning.” —from a 2018 interview for Prog Italia
