Ira “Bob” Born (1924–2023), candymaker who was called the Father of Peeps

by Linnea Crowther

Ira “Bob” Born was the former president of the candy company Just Born, where he invented Hot Tamales and created the process to mass-produce Peeps.

Father of Peeps

Born’s father, Sam Born, came to the U.S. from Russia and established Just Born in the early 1920s. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Born joined Just Born, thinking he would just work there briefly before starting medical school. But he fell in love with the candy business and ended up staying for decades. Born became known as the “Father of Peeps” after Just Born acquired the Rodda Candy Company, which made a shaped marshmallow candy that was produced by hand in a time-consuming process. He tinkered with a way to shape the marshmallows with a machine, inventing the mass production technique that made it possible for Peeps to be made by the millions every day. Born also invented Hot Tamales, reworking the company’s recipe for Mike and Ike to create a spicy cinnamon candy. He served as president of Just Born for more than 30 years, beginning in 1959. In Just Born’s hometown of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the first day of the Easter season has been designated Bob Born Day.

Notable quote

“I am amazed at the crazy artwork and games people come up with when it comes to our Peeps.  I’m constantly surprised at how many contests take place all over and I could not be more delighted!” —from a 2013 interview for the Rickie Report
