Irma Serrano (1933–2023), Mexico’s La Tigresa singer and actress

Irma Serrano was a Mexican singer, actress, and politician known as La Tigresa.

Career in the spotlight

Serrano got her start as a dancer before beginning her musical and acting career in the early 1960s. She was known for performing Mexico’s traditional ranchera music, as well as corridos, a type of folk ballad. Her hits included “Cancion De Un Preso,” “La Martina,” and “El Amora De La Paloma.” Serrano’s movie debut came with 1962’s “Santo vs. the Zombies,” starring alongside Mexican wrestler El Santo. Her other movies included “Tiburoneros,” “The Monastery of the Vultures,” “The Lovers of the Lord of the Night,” and 1973’s “La Tigresa,” from which she took her nickname. In 1994, Serrano entered politics as she successfully ran for the Mexican Senate. She served until 1997. Known for her dramatic looks and high-profile personal life, Serrano was long rumored to have been in a relationship with former Mexican President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, which she confirmed in her memoir “A calzón amarrado.”
