Kevin Conroy (1955–2022), voice of animated Batman

by Linnea Crowther

Kevin Conroy was an actor who provided the voice of Batman in many TV series and movies including “Batman: The Animated Series.”

Acting career

Conroy began his acting career on stage and in live-action TV, including a recurring role on the soap opera “Another World” as Jerry Grove. He made appearances on “Search for Tomorrow,” “Dynasty,” “Cheers,” and “Murphy Brown” before landing the voice role that would define his career. Conroy voiced Bruce Wayne and Batman in the 1990s cartoon “Batman: The Animated Series,” offering distinct voices for the two alter-egos.

Though the series only aired for three seasons, it became an influential classic, and Conroy’s voice work was so perfect that he became the definitive voice of Batman in many other TV shows, movies, and video games. Those TV shows include “The New Batman Adventures,” “Batman Beyond,” “Justice League,” and “Justice League Action.” Conroy voiced Batman in video games including the Arkham series and “Injustice: Gods Among Us.” In one instance, Conroy played Batman in a live-action role: an episode of the 2019 Arrowverse crossover event “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” In 2022, Conroy wrote “Finding Batman” for the anthology “DC Pride.” With art by J. Bone and Aditya Bidikar, the autobiographical comic told Conroy’s story of growing up gay and living through the AIDS epidemic, showing how his life informed his portrayal of Batman.

Notable quote

“Batman… He’s a complicated guy, and that voice can’t be just a quirky voice that you as an actor put on. It’s a state of mind that you have to get into because that voice comes from such a deep well of pain. If you don’t really do it genuinely, it sounds artificial. It sounds like you’re just putting on a funny voice. You really need to invest it with a lot of emotion and a lot of backstory.” —from a 2014 interview for the DC Comics blog
