Libby Titus’s legacy
Titus began her musical career in the late 1960s with her self-titled debut album. She followed it with another self-titled LP, which included her best-known song, “Love Has No Pride.” Titus’ second project had an array of notable producers, including Carly Simon, Robbie Robertson (1943–2023) of The Band, and Paul Simon. She wrote songs with Burt Bacharach (1928–2023), including “Riverboat” and “In Tune,” which she sang on his albums. She also collaborated with Dr. John (1941–2019), writing songs with him and performing the duet “The Sailor and the Mermaid” on a “Sesame Street” LP.
In the 1980s, Titus began organizing concerts in which several eminent musicians would appear together at small New York City venues. This project grew into the New York Rock and Soul Revue, a supergroup whose members included Steely Dan founders Donald Fagen and Walter Becker (1950–2017), Michael McDonald, Boz Scaggs, Patti Austin and other accomplished artists.
In addition to her musical pursuits, Titus was known for her relationships with prominent musicians. She dated The Band’s Levon Helm (1940–2012) in the 1960s and ‘70s; they had a daughter together, singer and songwriter Amy Helm. In 1993, Titus married Fagen, and they remained together until her death. The two made headlines in 2016 after an argument allegedly became physical, with Fagen reportedly pushing his wife into a window frame and injuring her arm. Titus initially told the press she was considering divorce, but the couple later issued a statement indicating that they were happy and would remain together.
