Barber was the son of New York Jets running back Marion Barber Jr. as well as the brother of Houston Texans safety Dominique Barber. He played college football for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, where he was an All-Big Ten selection in 2003. Barber entered the 2005 NFL Draft after his junior year in college and was selected by the Cowboys in the fourth round. He was a Pro Bowl pick in 2007 and earned the nickname Marion the Barbarian. Barber moved to the Bears in 2011 and played a single season there before his 2012 retirement.

I am truly heartbroken to hear the incredibly sad news of Marion Barber’s passing. He was a rare guy! Marion played the game with such passion! He had a deep-down love for football and it showed in everything that he did!
Marion Barber was my mom’s favorite player. (She told me tonight that she still has his T-shirt.) I know plenty of Cowboys fans feel the same way. He played the game as hard as anybody I’ve ever watched/covered.
He would run through the wall for you and he always had your back! I absolutely love Marion Barber and will miss him very much! Brill and I are so saddened by this news and extend our sincere condolences to the Barber family and all who loved him.
