Marisa Pavan (1932–2023), star of The Rose Tattoo

by Eric San Juan

Marisa Pavan was an actress whose work garnered an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe Award win for her role in the 1955 film “The Rose Tattoo,” starring Burt Lancaster and Anna Magnani.

Marisa Pavan’s legacy

Born Maria Luisa Pierangeli in Italy, Pavan followed in the footsteps of her twin sister, Pier Angeli, when she signed a contract with Paramount at the age of 19. Angeli won a Golden Globe in 1951 for her first American film, “Teresa.” Pavan would follow suit a few years later. Her screen debut came in 1952, with a small role in the John Ford film “What Price Glory,” but her breakthrough role was in 1955’s “The Rose Tattoo.” An adaptation of the Tennessee Williams play of the same name, the film received eight Academy Award nominations (winning three), including a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Pavan. She also won the Golden Globe Award in the same category.

Pavan continued to act into the 1990s, both in the U.S. and Europe. She had roles in films such as “The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit” alongside Gregory Peck and “The Midnight Story” with Tony Curtis. She also appeared on television in shows like “Ryan’s Hope,” “The Rockford Files,” “Wonder Woman,” and “Hawaii Five-O.”
