Actress and singer
Hicks got her start as a gospel singer, then toured as a backing vocalist with Stevie Wonder before releasing her breakthrough single, “Never Been in Love Before.” Her self-titled debut album also included a duet with Wonder, “Strong Is Our Love.” Hicks began her acting career in the early 1990s, with appearances on TV shows including “L.A. Law,” “Sister, Sister,” and South Central.” She had recurring roles as Remy on “Mad About You,” T’Pel on “Star Trek: Voyager,” and Jacara on “One Life to Live.” Hicks sang on an episode of “Babylon 5” and appeared in movies including “Bodies, Rest and Motion” and “Labor Day.” Her later TV appearances included “Daredevil” and “The Blacklist;” her most recent credit was a 2019 appearance on “Madam Secretary.” Hicks also had a Broadway career, including appearing as Rafiki in “The Lion King.”
