Max Julien (1933–2022), star of blaxploitation classic “The Mack”

by Linnea Crowther

Max Julien was an actor and screenwriter best known for starring in the 1973 blaxploitation film “The Mack.”

Actor and screenwriter

Julien starred alongside Richard Pryor (1940–2005) in “The Mack,” playing Goldie, a recently released convict who becomes a pimp. Though it wasn’t a big hit when it was released, “The Mack” has endured as a classic of its genre, and Julien’s performance was influential. His voice in the film has been sampled by hip-hop artists, and rappers including Snoop Dogg, P. Diddy, and Kid Rock have said their images were inspired in part by Goldie. Julien had notable roles in other movies including “Thomasine and Bushrod” and “Def Jam’s How to Be a Player,” and he appeared on TV in episodes of “The Mod Squad” and “One on One.” He wrote the screenplay for the 1973 blaxploitation film “Cleopatra Jones,” as well as co-producing it. In addition to acting and screenwriting, Julien was also an author, sculptor, and fashion designer.
