Michael McGrath (1957–2023), Tony-winning Broadway actor

by Eric San Juan

Michael McGrath was a Tony Award-winning Broadway actor best known for his roles in “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” “Tootsie,” and “Spamalot.”

Michael McGrath’s legacy

McGrath was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, but he made his name in New York City on the Broadway stage. He had early success in the late 1990s in “Swinging on a Star,” for which he was a Theatre World Award honoree and earned a Drama Desk Award nomination.

In 2005, he earned further raves – and laughs – when he played King Arthur’s coconut shell-banging squire Patsy in the comedy musical “Spamalot.” Based on the 1975 film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” McGrath’s work earned him both a Tony Award nomination and a Drama Desk Award nod.

McGrath took the spotlight in 2012 when he starred in “Nice Work If You Can Get It.” The Gershwin musical once again earned him Tony Award and Drama Desk Award nominations, and this time he won both. He also won an Outer Critics Circle Award and drew wide praise for his performance. Other shows include “Memphis,” “Tootsie,” and “My Favorite Year.” He also spent time as Martin Short’s sidekick and announcer on television’s “The Martin Short Show.”
