Micheline Presle (1922–2024), Devil in the Flesh star

by Linnea Crowther

Micheline Presle was a French actress who starred in such films as “Devil in the Flesh” and “Under My Skin.”

Micheline Presle’s legacy

Beginning her movie career in the 1930s when she was still a teen, Presle had risen to prominence on French screens by the early 1940s. The 1947 World War I drama “Devil in the Flesh” brought her international recognition as she played the controversial role of a woman who has an affair while her husband fights in the war. Hollywood came calling, and Presle began a U.S. film career in 1950, initially billed as Micheline Prelle.

After her first U.S. film, “Under My Skin,” Presle went on to star opposite Tyrone Power (1914–1958) in “American Guerilla in the Philippines,” opposite Errol Flynn (1909–1959) in “Adventures of Captain Fabian,” and alongside Paul Newman (1925–2008) in “The Prize.” Her other U.S. films included “If a Man Answers” and “King of Hearts.” However, Presle was unsatisfied with the quality of movies in which she was cast in the U.S., and she returned to France, preferring to star on European screens.

Presle continued to appear widely in French movies and TV shows into the early 2010s. In 2004, she was recognized with an Honorary Award from France’s prestigious César Awards.
