Mike Haffner’s legacy

For some football fans, what they’ll best remember about Mike Haffner is his diving catch playing against defending Super Bowl champions the New York Jets in 1969, helping the Denver Broncos secure victory in an otherwise losing 5-8-1 season. For others, it’s his years as a commentator for the NFL on NBC.

After playing for UCLA in college, Haffner played three seasons as a Bronco from 1968 to 1970—then the wide receiver finished off his career’s final season with the Cincinnati Bengals. He had 991 career yards on 59 catches amassed in 37 games, 16 of them starts. His career best game came as a rookie, when he pulled in four passes for 122 yards in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

After his playing days ended in 1971, Haffner moved to broadcasting, providing color commentary on NBC and later for KMGH-TV in Denver.
