Baseball Career

McCormick was signed by the New York Giants as a bonus baby out of high school in 1956, meaning he had to bypass the minor leagues and go straight to the majors.  He recorded 50 wins before turning age 23, a record broken by Mets great Dwight Gooden in 1986. McCormick was an all-star for the Giants in 1960 when he led the league in ERA with 2.70. He was traded in 1962 and played with Baltimore and Washington. He was traded back to the Giants in 1967 and had his greatest year with a record of 22-10, winning the Cy Young.
