Mike Schuler (1940–2022), former NBA Coach of the Year

Mike Schuler was a former NBA head coach for the Portland Trailblazers and the Los Angeles Clippers.

NBA Coach of the Year

Mike Schuler played college basketball at Ohio University and was a college basketball head coach for Virginia Military Institute and Rice University. He then became an assistant coach in the NBA for New Jersey and Milwaukee. He was hired as a head coach in 1986 by the Portland Trailblazers. Schuler led the Trailblazers to the NBA playoffs in his first two years and was the NBA Coach of the Year his rookie season. He was fired by Portland in the middle of his third season with the team. The following year he became the head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers until being let go during his third season. He was an assistant coach for various NBA clubs until he retired in 2005. His record as an NBA head coach was 179-159.
