Milt Larsen (1931–2023), co-founder of the Magic Castle

by Eric San Juan

Milt Larsen was an actor, magician, and writer who co-founded the Magic Castle, a private club for magicians and the clubhouse for the Academy of Magical Arts.

Milt Larsen’s legacy

Larsen grew up surrounded by magic. His father was a performing magician, and his mother was an early TV personality who performed under the name The Magic Lady. Even his brother, Bill, performed magic. When Larsen’s father passed away in 1953, he died with a life goal left unfulfilled: creating a club where magicians could gather, socialize, perform, and talk about their craft.

Ten years later, Larsen realized his father’s dream when he opened the doors of the Magic Castle, a restored French Chateau mansion in Hollywood that serves as a gathering place for magicians throughout the world. Larsen’s brother became President of the Academy of Magical Arts and Sciences, and the club has since become a mecca for performing artists. Steve Martin, Johnny Carson, Orson Welles, and many others took the stage there.

When not immersed in magic, Larsen was a writer and actor, writing for shows like “Truth or Consequences.” He also created musicals and comedy albums; hosted a talk radio show about the performing arts; and appeared in numerous television shows and movies including “Bewitched” and “Addams Family Values.” In addition, Larsen penned a number of books about the art of magic.
