At least 21 people died in Mississippi in an unusually long-lasting tornado that touched down on Friday night, March 24, 2023. Another person died in Alabama storms that same night.
The towns of Rolling Fork, Midnight, and Silver City, Mississippi, were hit particularly hard by the tornado, which is believed to have been an EF4 storm. It traveled about 170 miles and lasted for more than an hour.
Some of the names of those who died have been released. They are:

Ethan Herndon, 33, of Wren, Mississippi.
Riley Mae Herndon, 1, of Wren.
April Johnson.
Erika “Nikki” Moore.
Danny Munford, 51, of Carroll County, Mississippi, a construction worker.
Helen Munford, 54, of Carroll County, a schoolteacher at Marshall Elementary in Carrollton, Mississippi.
JaDarrion Murphy, 14, of Carroll County, an eighth grade student.
Lonnie Pierce of Rolling Fork.
Malissa Pierce of Rolling Fork.
